Funding and policy context · Research notes
Primary funding sources have been linked for 11 of 51 organizations, focusing on the organizations named in the structural takeaways. The remaining 40 funding descriptions are supplied claims. A funding source does not verify the entire record.
Concentrated funding, not a demonstrated monopsony
Coefficient Giving, formerly Open Philanthropy, acknowledges that it and Good Ventures represent a concentrated share of AI safety philanthropy. It also describes efforts to diversify funding. The sources reviewed do not establish that every named nonprofit relies primarily on one donor, or that a single buyer controls this market. Read the funder’s account ↗
Commercial investment is documented
Gray Swan and Mindgard announced financing for AI security products; Haize discloses seed investment. These examples support the presence of a funded commercial sector. They do not establish sector-wide growth rates or Fortune 500 and defense customers for every firm. Open the organization records for sources.
Policy disagreement is organization-specific
CAIS reports that its Action Fund cosponsored SB 1047 in 2024. Andreessen Horowitz published opposition to that bill and support for open-source development. These positions do not establish a uniform nonprofit or commercial political bloc, and an investor’s position cannot be assigned to its portfolio companies.
